Edmonton to Calgary
This road trip is a big deal. The drive through the Rocky Mountains is one of the top 10 drives on the planet. Things you might see without even leaving your vehicle: hoodoos, bison, waterfalls, hawks and glaciers.
We flew into Edmonton, where we rented a car. We mapped out our next 5 days driving from Edmonton to Calgary.
Stop 1 – Jasper
We took a ride on an ice bus over glaciers at the Columbia Icefields. Once in Jasper visited the Athabasca Falls and Maligne Lake/Canyon.
Stop 2 – Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
World famous for it’s turquoise lake, it didn’t disappoint. We had lunch at The Fairmont with the most spectacular view. After we hiked Lake Agnes Teahouse, a 6.8km trail where you have tea and pie at the top.
Moraine Lake is a little out of the way but definitely worth the trip after Lake Louise. If we had more time I would have loved to Kayak at either of the places.
Stop 3 – Banff
This little town is the cutest. Almost everyone’s a tourist, and I’m not surprised at all. I could have easily parked it there permanently. We rented bikes, walked around and took the gondola up to the top. We didn’t make it to the hot springs but we heard great things about it!
Travel Tip: Book in advance. We were going with the flow and the night we arrived in Banff, EVERYTHING was sold out.
Stop 4 – Canmore
Canmore is only 15 minutes from Banff. It’s a great alternative to Banff, less touristy and cheaper. We posted up here for the night!
Stop 5 – Calgary
Must be nice living 1 hour from the Mountains. We returned our rental in Calgary to save us the three hour loop up to Edmonton and caught our flight back to Toronto.
